    Sunset California Beach Drive is my ode to the late 70s culture that may or may not have really existed, but at least did in cinema at the time:  pinball/hotdog championships, custom painted vans, bonin’ car hops at the local drive-in restaurant, endless beach parties, and insane tanlines…

    Sunset California Beach Drive is the punk kid that takes girls’ tops off at the beach and buries them, falls in love and goes on a nice walk and then parties after stealing the local firetruck.

    Sunset California Beach Drive is AM Gold shit and Power Pop cheese with a dash of Punk & Disco Rock.

    The Jazzman/Now-Again Funk series has offered surveys as broad as they are deep: Midwest Funk, Texas Funk, Florida Funk, Carolina Funk. Yet this might be the most important trawl of all: California Funk. Over a decade in the making, this – from compilers Malcolm Catto and Gerald “Jazzman” Short – is the Funk masterpiece. This anthology examines what happened to the independent ensembles who gigged during Sly and the Family Stone’s Bay-area renaissance. It delves into the stories sidemen who worked alongside LA’s Charles Wright and the Watt’s 103rd Street Rhythm Bands and offers answers to elusive questions. At the same time, it offers thunderous drums, fuzzy wah-wah, fat basslines, blistering horns and exhortations akin to James Brown and his many disciples over its 21 track selection.

    This official reissue was licensed by the lost bandleaders, bass players, drummers, label owners and studio-vets – independents, all, lost to history no more.     Subtitled "Year of the Crowes Vol II", this is Disc 1 of a further three-disc instalment of the "Cover me with a good Dream" series, covering (no pun intended) audience recordings of performances of other artists’ songs from 2005 onwards. Compiled in July 2007, the original version was more carefully put together than the original of Dics 6-8, but the segues were often not quite right to my ears, and the length of applause for some tracks was a bit excessive. But, Gott sei dank, the compiler listed the dates of each song!

    This version fixes these faults: I’ve managed to segue all the tracks seamlessly, and excessive applause (as a rule of thumb, twenty seconds is a smidgeon long) has been trimmed (it’s three and a half minutes shorter overall). I moved "You’ve got to hide your Love away" from before "Alabama" to the start, as the start didn’t segue well with anything – I only realised later that it was from the same show as the next track!

Compiled in July 2007, the original version (ie CDs 9-11) was more carefully put together than the original of Dics 6-8, but the segues were often not quite right, the volume varied widely between tracks, and the length of applause for some tracks was a bit excessive. But at least the compiler listed the dates of each song!

    This version fixes these faults: all the tracks segue seamlessly, sound levels have been normalised, and excessive applause has been trimmed. It’s three minutes shorter overall. The running order has also been changed significantly – the Beach Boys covers, which are a bit of a joke (it’s one of the worst versions of "You are so beautiful" you are ever likely to hear) and in fact are met with some booing, are moved to the start, and are followed with most of the quieter acoustic songs, and the louder songs are moved to the end for a stronger finish.

    All tracks come from my own collection. Where I have more than one version of a song I have selected
    either the best source or the most special/rare one.

    Again I have only used songs from Steve’s own shows and left out guest appearances at other artists’ concerts.
    Of course there is the occasional duet here from his shows.

    Three covers on this volume have also appeared on volume one, but from different shows:

    Technically what I did was: extraction with EAC; some trimming with CDWave (I have deleted tuning and talk that has nothing to do with the songs); and fade in, fade out, and normalizing with SoundForge.
    With so many sources, I have left out the lineages, but want to thank the tapers, the people I’ve traded with, and the people who’ve uploaded Steve’s shows online.

    STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) is an instrumental band who are known for their live performances. The band’s genre-blending sound is based heavily on instrumental rock and electronic music crossed with elements of funk, jazz, psychedelia, and hip hop. The band mixes standard live rock instrumentation with electronics, favoring group rhythm over individual solos.

    STS9 has released five studio albums, one remixed album, and one live DVD (Live As Time Changes) on their own label 1320 Records. As an independent artist, they have succeeded by using their live performance to conduct multiple concert tours and appear at music festivals. They have achieved significant niche popularity in a few areas of the country through frequent appearances, most notably in greater San Francisco Bay Area including Santa Cruz, California; the greater Denver, Colorado area including Boulder, Colorado; and the greater Atlanta, Georgia area including Athens, Georgia.
