Sunset California Beach Drive is my ode to the late 70s culture that may or may not have really existed, but at least did in cinema at the time: pinball/hotdog championships, custom painted vans, bonin’ car hops at the local drive-in restaurant, endless beach parties, and insane tanlines… Sunset California Beach Drive is the punk kid that takes girls’ tops off at the beach and buries them, falls in love and goes on a nice walk and then parties after stealing the local firetruck.
Sunset California Beach Drive is AM Gold shit and Power Pop cheese with a dash of Punk & Disco Rock.

Description / Review
———————————————————————
The Jazzman/Now-Again Funk series has offered surveys as broad as they are deep: Midwest Funk, Texas Funk, Florida Funk, Carolina Funk. Yet this might be the most important trawl of all: California Funk. Over a decade in the making, this – from compilers Malcolm Catto and Gerald “Jazzman” Short – is the Funk masterpiece. This anthology examines what happened to the independent ensembles who gigged during Sly and the Family Stone’s Bay-area renaissance. It delves into the stories sidemen who worked alongside LA’s Charles Wright and the Watt’s 103rd Street Rhythm Bands and offers answers to elusive questions. At the same time, it offers thunderous drums, fuzzy wah-wah, fat basslines, blistering horns and exhortations akin to James Brown and his many disciples over its 21 track selection.
This official reissue was licensed by the lost bandleaders, bass players, drummers, label owners and studio-vets – independents, all, lost to history no more. Packaged as a “mini-LP” in a thick, “paste-on” gatefold cardboard sleeve Now-Again’s issue of California Funk also comes with a 24 page full color booklet with full liner notes, annotation, and never-before-seen photos of these most impressive organizations.

————————
California trio Wildfire came to Austin in 1969. They shared the stage with many performers such as Johnny Winter, Allman Brothers, Freddy King, Shivas Headband and many more. After laying down partial tracks at the Beach Boys’ recording studios (guitarist Randy Love is Beach Boy Mike Love’s cousin) This album is extra heavy psychedelic rock with dual vocals, great stereo effects, all original songs in Moby Grape/Blue Cheer direction. They use to be one of the loudest band’s around on their custom build Quilter amps. For the first time officially released direct from copies of the master tapes.Track Listing

Description / Review:
————————
CD reissue of this unreleased album of West Coast psych recordings from 1969. "CD of LP plus one bonus track. Monstrous & unreleased at the time heavy/psychedelic/West Coast artifact of the highest order. This is one of the five best-ever promo-only releases to emerge from California. Only released in a quantity of a couple of copies to get a major record deal that never materialized. Three of the songs were used in a low-budget biker flick called Black Angels. The original demo LP had only a plain black label with no kinds of credits. We found this hidden gem looking for unreleased music by the band The Zoo of Presents Chocolate Moose fame. The original producer told us that a demo-only LP was released by The Zoo after the Chocolate Moose album. The slightly different line-up had the name Joyful Noise (you can see a scan of the acetate in Hans Pokora’s 4001 Record Collector’s Dreams) but at this time they were looking for a tougher name to fit to the music and they found Mad Dog. Under this name a couple of test pressings were done. So we made a re-release deal straight away. The tape was sent for remastering and cover artwork. To our surprise the guy told us, after hearing the tape, that he knew the music and that it had already been re-released by another label without any kinds of info using the numbers from the dead end part of the vinyl which was C1/C2! The C was for Cavett, the producer’s name. Since the project was already paid, we decided to go on with the release to please collectors with an amazing remastering straight from the master tapes, and an insert with unseen pictures and a band bio written by Morgan Cavett."Track Listing

————————
After a first short spin of listening to Instant Orange we thought, yeah we have heard that before. Sounds a bit like the Byrds. But we were so wrong! What we knew was the sound of a 12 string Rickenbacker but "this album" had nothing to do with the Byrds. The music is way more complex, the lyrics are deep and powerful, with experimental bits and loops, electronic oscillators, backward tapes, stunning rhythms, great electric guitars and piano bits, all arranged into a powerful folk-rock song which gets you out of your chair. Sometimes not far from Mothers Of Invention the music of Instant Orange is unique, just too good and too clever for the early 1970’s. Based in California, they recorded the album in 1973 in and pressed only 100 LPå«s. Several singles and EPå«s where recorded as well, which is the 2nd LP on this double album.Track Listing

————-From the ashes of the band "Red Mountain" rose Born Again. Originally from Marin County in Northern California the band traveled to Los Angeles to try to find fortune and fame. Local producer Roger Dollarhide took the boys under his wing and recorded tracks with them in late ’69 and early ’70 at Sun West Studios in Hollywood. Led by the tasteful guitar playing of Larry Otis and the soulful vocals of Bryce Sullivan, Born Again was a very versatile band that created a hybrid style all their own. Whether it’s a country tinged ballad ala KAK ("She’s Gone") or an eerie guitar psych instrumental ("Laura’s Waltzing" from the 1970 Film Soundtrack from "The Velvet Vampire") these boys were one tight unit that delivered the goods. A chance meeting with the legendary Pat Boone is documented in the LP’s extensive liner notes.
