With the name Wildhoney I’m sure they’ve destined themselves to be mistaken every so often with Wild Nothing, which won’t be much of a disservice really…since they are both, to some extent, dipping their toes into the same shoegazey tones. Wildhoney are more of your traditional shoegaze band though, with big thick guitar washes and syrupy laden melodies in abundance. There is a somewhat delicateness to their sound, when they lay off their pedals a bit, that kind of hints at some of the dreamier guitar work of The Sundays material. Kind of wish there was more of that spread across Sleep Through It, which is serving as the Baltimore bands debut after a couple singles. However, they do the rock parts well too…as presented on returning track “Seventeen” from the Seventeen Again single of last year. It’s a prime example of how to weave a more driving rock song and shoegaze and it was probably a wise move to dig it up again and throw it on the debut. Not positive if this will turn any heads, but Wildhoney seem to be working on the outer fringes of the genre where people might appreciate some of the obscurities referenced within their music while being backed by some strong songwriting no less.
