Subject: Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic

Dear riders, The Cascade Bicycle Club wants to thank you for riding this year’s Group Health STP and to provide you with some follow up information. We also want to thank whoever was in charge of the weather – pat yourself on the back! According to Jerry Baker, 26-time finisher and first ever winner when STP was a sanctioned race, this year’s event had the best riding weather ever.

ACCIDENTS
We had two very serious-looking accidents, but we are happy to report that the riders involved are on the road to recovery and will be just fine.

RIDER STATISTICS
We had 8,907 registered riders, of which 2,156 finished in one day! The first group of one-day riders arrived at the finish line at 3:05 p.m.

Age:
46 riders are over 70
Oldest: 86
Oldest Male: 86
Oldest Female: 76
Youngest: 1
28 under 10

Times Ridden:
53% first timers (4707)
15% ridden 1 time (1306)
2 ridden 26 times,
1 25 times
21 ridden 20 times or more

Food Consumption at the Spanaway Food Stop
9,400 sandwiches
8,000 cookies
6,000 Clif bars
3,000 bagels
18,000 servings of fruit (bananas, grapes, plums, etc.)
900 gallons of Ultima Sports Drink

A few issues that we continue to struggle with to find a solution are:

1. Riders who don’t register but still use all the services including eating the food your registration paid for. Many of you may know riders who fit this description and don’t think it makes a difference. But multiply that single rider by 500 to 1,000 unplanned riders, and you can see why we can run out of things.

2. Riders who insist on having personal support vehicles that follow them on the ride causing large volumes of traffic on the route and create a very dangerous situation.

3. Riders who do not follow the rules of the road. What I always say is we can do just about everything, but we can’t ride the bike for you. The number one complaint we get from riders is about the riding behavior of other riders.
