Dear Mr. Scott:

Thank you for your e-mail to Governor Gregoire regarding the Chehalis Western Trail. As the Olympic Region Administrator for the Washington State Department of Transportation, I was asked to respond.

I want to assure you that the bridge over I-5 will meet all current American with Disability Act (ADA) and DOT standards. The bridge project has two bollards. One on each end of the bridge, located on the paths leading to the bridge. The paved area for the paths is 12 feet wide. The bollards will be centered in the path. This will leave 5.5 feet on either side of the bollard to access the bridge.

Thurston County Parks are responsible for the trail system outside of our right-of-way. By copy of this e-mail, I am sharing your concerns about the rest of the trail system with our ADA Coordinator, Kathryn LePome.

Thank you for writing. Please feel free to contact Kathryn or myself if we may provide additional information.

Sincerely,

Randall A. Hain

Region Administrator

Chehalis Western Trail
Taxpayers (via the state DOT) are spending a lot of money to build a bridge over I-5 for the trail, but it isn’t accessible for wheel chair users or those of us on trikes, tandem bikes or other long-wheelbase conveyances.

Thurston county parks has taken it on themselves to design gates and bollards that don’t meet DOT standards and which are unsafe.

Can’t you make them fix the gates (and the other accessibility issues) as a condition for funding?
