Dedicated to Scott Mathews, one of the founding members of the Butthole Surfers who lost his battle with cancer recently. Here we have the earliest known live recording of the band, and the only known recording with Andrew on bass (though, I have a tough time believing NOBODY recorded the "Texas Love-In")

This has been posted on the web a couple of times in MP3 format, but it’s nearly impossible to find this complete version with the Gibby intro and excerpt of the Big Boys set. I got it from Bobby Beeman, bass player fer Stick Men with Ray Guns, who taped it himself, when I questioned the date, saying that the Big Boys werenít on the flyer, he replied with this:

"The bill was Butthole Surfers and Stick Men. They opened up. Then the Big Boys were there, and they wanted to play a couple of songs, so that was cool. After them, MDC wanted to play a couple of songs, and that was cool too, butt we’d driven in from Dallas and that club was in a neighborhood and closed early, all music had to stop by 10pm or midnight or something. Anyway, it was getting down to the point that we weren’t going to have much time to play, but MDC’s songs are short and they promised to quit after 2 or 3 songs. As they stopped their 4th song, Bobby Soxx walked up to the front and told them to stop, that we were going to play now… and they started a 5th song. He pulled out his dick and pissed all over David Dickter, which almost started a fight, butt Buxf from the Dicks ran in and told MDC to knock it off, and they did. Then we set up and started playing. MDC was mad at us because Bobby pissed on them, and the sound man was mad because he’d also pissed on the monitors and as we started to play, some fights started to break out. MDC wanted to fight, and the Dicks were fighting them back as we played, which was kinda weird because them and the Dicks were best of buddies at the time. Anyway, I’d been staying with Steve Anderson and David Yow and we were walking up the street earlier in the day and found a dead and stiff cat. I had it in a garbage bag behind my amp. As all this other shit was going, I ran back and grabbed it and tossed it out into the pit. Then we started playing Scavenger of Death and they started tearing up this dead cat. The owner of the club came in about then… the soundman was mad that his monitors had been pissed on, there were fights breaking out all over, and there were these dead cat parts getting thrown about everywhere. Studio 29 was a dance studio that booked a few shows… she came unglued. I don’t think anybody got paid… and the cops came by and told us to leave Austin and not to come back. It was one of the crazier Austin gigs… a video would have been awesome!"

A classic story, and one that seems to describe how crazy the Texas punk scene was in the early days. When ya look at the laundry list of freaks to come outta TX, it makes perfect sense!

Anywho, Scott Mathews helped lay the foundation fer the Butthole Surfers. Though he quit the band in 1982, the songs that were written during his tenure were being recorded and released long after his departure – and played live still (when the band is active, that is!)

RIP Scott.
