Description / Review:
————————
If you’re owt like the gaggle of geeks in our office, you’ll have developed a serious crush on Glass Candy and their IDIB output over the last couple of years. Their cover of Kraftwerk’s ‘Computer Love’ was simply inspired, and their ‘Beat Box’ LP is a firm favourite round these parts, so we’re all rather excited to take delivery of this beautifully timed compilation of singles, B-Sides and rarities recorded between 2006 and 2008. Johnny Jewel has the touch of master disco magician on ‘Poison Or Remedy’ taking cues from Chris & Cosey-ish electro but adding friendlier Pianos , or proto disco house on ‘Animal Imagination’ reminding us of a bedroom bound Hercules and Love Affair, while ‘Something Stirring In Space’ could be a long lost Grace Jones studio offcut, and features Ida No on a chillingly austere performance. The undoubted highlight of the set lies in their cover of legendary Texan rap act Geto Boys’ ‘Mind Playing Tricks On me’, spinning the track 180 degrees into a pop friendly but syruppy psyched disco winner that’s almost worth the price of admission alone. One of the highlights from the ‘After dark’ compilation, ‘Ms Broadway’ also gets a remix treatment, adding a fuzztoned sawtooth synthline for extra disco power, while all the slow freaks need to start practising in the mirror for ‘Touching The Morning Mist’, a darkly affected slow burner with the potential to add some high drama to any floor you should choose to use it on. It’s hard to think of anyone other than the Permanent Vacation label executing this style to such a high standard, so if you’re looking for the most authentic and effective vintage-not-vinatge disco around you’d do very well with this. Brilliant.
