Moby Grape – Dark Magic & Fall On Amsterdam

here is the info file from Dime

This project began as a simpel remastering of the bootleg CD "Dark Magic" That idea soon became unrealistic: some of the album has been officially released, some is even more horrible audio quality than what is included here, some isn’t even Moby Grape. I found some better audio quality versions of a couple of the "Dark Magic" cuts in my own collection.

The version of "Hey Grandma" below was labelled variously 12/31/66, Avalon 1/23/68 and Avalon late ’68 (which it most likely is). It goes with tracks 1-05 to 1-12, which are also almost certainly mid- to late ’68. I found another version of "Miller’s Blues" to go on CD 2, but it turned out to be the same as the version released on "Vintage".

The speed on everything except track 1-04 was WAY fast, anywhere from 2% to about 14%. Those of you who have only heard versions of the "Dark Magic" from the bootleg CD will find it almost like a new song. I could only come close on speed correction because the wow & flutter on many cuts is 0.3% or more. There were dozens of volume and EQ changes to try to help the "flow" of listenability. The track sequencing is mainly an attempt to prevent repeated songs coming too close together, but I think it works pretty well overall.
