This is big fun from mostly Northwest bands, all DIY and punk in ethos if not in sound. If you jam on K or have ever been to a Yo Yo A Go Go, this is for you.liner notes say:
Julep was released in 1993.
All bands and musicians appearing on this album retain copyright and publishing control of their music and recordings.
Recently Kurt Cobane wrote of the demise of punk rock. For him I would guess that it is gone from his life forever. As my friend Lois pointed out, he can’t dance up front at the stage at shows anymore. So what is all the music on this album?
The experiences I had while recording this record are amongst my fondest memories in recent times. There were no contracts, or lawyers, or even receipts. Most of the recordings were done in trade for allowing me to include songs in this collection. I don’t mean to boast of being generous or noble, or even humble; but I do mean to set an example. Certainly people need to make a living, and making it from one’s creative talents is a wonderful thing. But to allow all the terrible sorts of people to re-enter our lives just when we have the power to keep them from us; that’s what makes our art simply a job, with a boss.
I hope that you enjoy this album. I know that putting it out leaves us all wide open to becoming "Classic Indie Rock" some day. I’m sorry, I can’t help it. There’ll even be ads.
liner from Projector, another comp in the same series has a better description:
A projector is the mechanical apparatus that casts light through a piece of celluloid, creating images on a screen. We call them movies. A “Projector” is a compilation of 22 tracks recorded at Yoyo Studio in Olympia, Washington. We call it rock and roll.
With an eclectic roster that ranges from sing-song pop to heavy metal, Projector is the fifth compilation to come from Yoyo Studio, the digital recording studio located in the mystical environs of Olympia’s historic Capitol Theater. The folks at Yoyo Recordings have spent the last decade staying true to their long held faith in community and artistic spirit. Whether they are hosting the week long music festival Yoyo A Go Go or charging bands who will contribute to their projects the reasonable sum of nothing to record at the studio, Yoyo has kept the spirit of independent music alive in its most pure form.
The bands on Projector reflect this spirit of independence as well.
For folks who enjoy seeing their favorite artists take a new byway, have an interest in supporting a healthy indie scene, or just want to dip into the sounds of Olympia, Projector is the place to be.
