———————————————————————After a summer of Daniel Johnston reissues, along comes the great man’s new offering, assembled with the assistance of Jason Falkner and Joey Waronker, also seen drumming on the new Air album this week. The requisite air of chaos is maintained faithfully by all involved, although Falkner – in his role as producer – is unafraid of bringing a slew of additional instrumentation to the table. Fortunately, there’s always a decent balance struck between serving the song and preserving the raw, unvarnished nature of Johnston’s talent. The record gets off to a rollicking start with Mind Movies’ and ‘Fake Records Of Rock And Roll’, the latter of which pays a visit to the same sort of areas previously traversed on ‘Rock This Town’, taking on a barroom shuffle with an uncynical verve. Better yet are ‘High Horse’ (whose ELO vibes are entirely commendable) and ‘I Had Lost My Mind’, a rambling alt. rock piece with a big chorus and verses packed with typically surreal and colourful verbal overspill about Johnston’s recognition of some dark days behind him. – Boomkat
