Audacity are back with a bang, with a harder and heavier album than Butter Knife. With superstar Ty Segall on production duty, it’s a ferocious slice of garage rock. However, gone is the lo-fi production, as Audacity have cleaned up their act. Instead the band have opted for a crisper sound, Hyper Vessels is delivered in exquisite hi-fidelity sound in its most beautifully polished form.
Whilst that may be a downer for some, as the band may have been seen to have lost some of their grit, it’s not evident in the slightest with incendiary tracks like Baseball capturing the band at their heaviest. Taking nods from Ty Segall the track possesses an abundance of swagger with its driving bass and shouted lyrics.
However, there is a more subdued side to the band still showing through in the likes of Previous Cast, this more measured track is reminiscent of Weezer. With the bands influences really showing, the track is no less instant or compelling. Hyper Vessels is packed with hooks and chant along lines even if every track is not a high-octane blast of power.
There’s a definite split in their sound, from the laidback and the relatively chilled out to the visceral nature of the likes of Awake. This rip roaring garage punk track again focusing on the bands exceptional musical ability as the track is littered with incredible intricacies, all underpinned by the angst that seems to run throughout Hyper Vessels.
Audacity have achieved an almost perfect blend of sound with Hyper Vessels, whilst clearly wearing their influences on their sleeves. From 90s Grunge, Garage Rock, Punk and to the current California scene. In the past the records have rightly received praise for their raw nature, but this album sees the band transcend that it’s a more mature record and their sound has benefitted from the improved production. There is no less rawness there it is just delivered in a more polished manner.
