Compilation info

———————————————————————

After releasing two volumes of the seminal and endlessly enjoyable Live at the Future Primitive Soundsession and a couple other records, San Francisco’s Future Primitive label released this compilation of (mostly) studio tracks from friends and label associates. The presence of artists like Cut Chemist, Rob Swift, and DJ Z-Trip might lead one to believe that this is a turntabalism showcase in the vein of the influential Return of the DJ compilations on Bomb, but label head and executive producer Mark Herlihy has always had an ear for groovy, danceable hip-hop, and these tracks never approach dissonance or flaunt technique for technique’s sake. Tracks by DJ Faust and Shortee, Mammal, and DJ Design are upbeat, loose, and funky sample-fests inspired by the turn-of-the-’90s collage approach pioneered by the Dust Brothers and the Bomb Squad. Slightly darker in tone is “Invitation to Hell” by Presage, featuring Mr. Dibbs and Jel, which is built on the rhythm of Can’s “Hey You” and makes sinister use of sitar samples. Rob Swift’s fine “Funky Listening” is far less abstract than his usual fare, and DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist contribute a snippet from the live 45 session that eventually appeared on the legendary “Brainfreeze.” A worthy introduction to a fertile scene.
