Century South In Duwamish

  • Head south on First Ave. NW.
  • turn left on 60th
  • turn right on Greenwood
  • take the first left onto 59th
  • take the first right onto Phinney (has a bike lane)
  • turn left onto 50th (at the light)
  • turn right onto Fremont (at the light)
  • Go down the hill (may have to stop for the light at 34th) and across the Fremont bridge (on the sidewalk)
  • Cross Nickerson (Westlake) and stay right. Go up the hill on Dexter
  • Go down the other side of the hill on Dexter and watch out for traffic at Mercer (there’s a light)
  • Cross Denny Way and turn right on Bell
  • Turn left on Second Ave. (has a bike lane on the left)
  • Turn right on Lenora. Below First Ave take to the sidewalk to avoid bad cobblestones.
  • Avoid the cleats on the right side of the sidewalk.
  • Turn left on Western and ride down the hill to the waterfront.
  • Take the first right onto Pine heading under the viaduct
  • (alternatively stay on Western and turn right on James)
  • Turn left onto the Alaska Way bike trail
  • Trail ends at Royal Brougham – continue south on Alaska Way (has a bike lane)
  • Turn right on Spokane (take sidewalk / trail) and follow the trail to the approach to the lower West Seattle bridge
  • Cross the bridge. At the west end is the junction with the Alkai bikeway which takes off to the right.
  • Instead, turn left onto Marginal Place SW which takes you down to West Marginal Way in a short block
  • Go south on West Marginal Way (may have some traffic). After a couple of long blocks (at the Grayline bus lot) find the Duwamish Trail on the left and
  • Continue south on the trail first on the east and then on the west of the railroad tracks
  • Trail turns left at SW Michigan and goes under approaches to First Ave. S. bridge
  • Trail turns right beside Highway 99 and ends at S. Holden
  • Turn left on S. Holden (watch out for traffic exiting Highway 99)
  • At the first stop sign turn right on 5th Ave. S.
  • At the next stop sign turn left on S. Monroe
  • At the first stop sign turn right on 8th Ave. S.
  • Cross S. Cloverdale at the light
  • Where 8th Ave. S bears left to a dead-end look for the entrance to the bike trail next to Highway 599
  • (this trail fragment may be overgrown to the point of being scary and badly warped by roots.- see alternate below)
  • Where this fragment of the trail ends turn left onto S. Henderson and pedal up a short steep hill
  • At the bottom of the other side of the hill turn right onto
  • 4th Ave. S (may have some traffic).
  • (You can also get to 4th Ave. South by turning left (east) at the 8th Ave. S / Cloverdale intersection.)
  • A block south of Henderson get into the left turn lane and continue south on
  • West Marginal Place S (a frontage road separated from Highway 599 by a chain-link fence with little traffic)
  • Watch out for traffic exiting from 599 at the beginning and end of this segment
  • At S 102nd (the next interchange on Highway 599) look for the entrance to the bike trail on the right.
  • Follow the trail as it crosses the Duwamish and hugs the east bank between the river and a Boeing building.
  • The trail crosses the Duwamish again on the East Marginal Way S bridge, and wraps around under that bridge before continuing south on the river bank and through parking lots
  • Watch out for chickens in Allentown. After returning to the riverbank the trail goes under the Allentown bridge and through more parking lots
  • After crossing under I-5 the trail follows the sidewalk on the east side of Interurban avenue next to the Foster golf course before returning to the riverbank
  • The trail crosses the river again at the junction with the Black River and enters Fort Dent park.
  • Leaving the park, cross the bridge, turn right, and look for the start of the trail on the left.
